A good selfie camera is a must nowadays especial for the ladies. It’s it probably the ladies Itel had in mind when they released the S11 smartphone.
The Itel S11 is available in online shops such as Jumia & Konga for about N24,000. It’s the perfect smartphone for peeps getting out of college & just landed their first job. Or for those who want a decent phone without spending so much money.
For the sake of this Itel S11 review, I will be comparing the S11 smartphone with other phones within its price range. This is the best way to help you decide if this phone is worth buying.
Itel S11 Back
The Itel S11 is well built, the back cover feels like plastic & metal at the same time. It’s as light as most plastic covers & as strong as metallic ones. Whichever material is used here, it feels cool, comfortable to hold & carry around. The back cover has a little curved edges that makes it appear slim & help it sit comfortably on your hand.
With most N24,000 smartphones, we are used to seeing mediocre designs but the Itel S11 is not one of them, the device will now and again attract eyeballs when you take it out. At the back you will only get the camera & dual LED flash, no fingerprint sensor just yet & honestly I wasn’t expecting one within this price range. The speaker grille is at the rear, towards the bottom & is quite loud too.
The back cover is detachable so you can access the 2 SIM card slots, MicroSD card slot & the battery. Of course, the battery on the Itel S11 is removable.
The normal ports & buttons are included with this phone, the volume keys & power button are on the right, the headphone jack up top & the MicroUSB port at the bottom. Nothing thrilling about these but I observed the volume keys are a bit hard to press, they don’t give much feedback when I pressed them & nine times out of ten I thought I had not pressed them when in fact I did. This is a small issue but I hope Itel improves on this in their subsequent phones.
The Itel S11 front section has the 5-inch display with capacitive keys below it & the 5MP front facing camera with LED flash at the top. The 5MP camera is out there for everyone to see, it’s one of the first things you’ll notice when you unveil this phone from its box for the first time. It’s quite visible & some people could see this as a bad thing but I didn’t seem to mind it, it appears different & shows you that this is evidently a selfie smartphone.
Itel has placed a free flip cover with this device so you can use that to give your phone a special look while protecting it from scratches.
5.0 inch, 854×480 pixels
As I earlier mentioned, the Itel S11 has a 5-inch display. This is an IPS display with an FWVGA resolution (854×480 pixels) that’s vibrant & bright enough for outdoor use. Speaking of brightness, you have to adjust that by hand, no option to adjust that automatically by letting adapt to the lighting around you. Even with that, this display is quite good for a device within its price range.
This display was very responsive most of the times but occasionally I noticed it was slow. Most people may not have this experience but I just had to mention it. This happened mostly when I tried to unlock the device, I saw that it takes time to respond. This also happened with the device (dialer) app. Like I said, this is an isolated case that happened infrequently.
The 5-inch display can as well be used for media consumption. I viewed some videos on it & wasn’t disappointed, colour reproduction is as expected. If you’re into web browsing & social media, this display isn’t big enough but you’ll get used to it sooner than later. This display size is above all perfect for those who want a size that’s easy & comfortable to use in nearly all situation, neither too big nor too small.
Performance & Software
1.3GHz processor, 1GB RAM, 8GB of storage space
The display & design aside, I’m sure you definitely will like to know how the phone actually performs. The phone features a 1.3GHz MediaTek MT6580M processor. This is a quad core processor that is paired with 1GB of RAM & 8GB of internal storage space that is expandable to 32GB. This combination handles most tasks as you’d expect but you’ll see it struggle when you start running some heavy & demanding apps. You’ll still be able to run intensive games like Asphalt 8 but if you try multitasking, you’ll notice the device starts slowing down.
I put my Airtel SIM card in the Itel S11 & did not have any problems picking up network. The device supports up to 3G, but no 4G yet, this is ok but I believe adding 4G LTE support could have made this device the most appealing phone in its price range. Still on the network, phone calls were clear in locations with good coverage. The person I spoke with could hear me perfectly & I too could hear him without distortions.
Software-wise, the Itel S11 features an Android 6.0 Marshmallow that has been tweaked a little. It still has some stock Android remnants despite the fact the company has personalized it a bit. There’s one thing about the app drawer that I observed, we’re used to the app drawer sitting at the centre just above the home button but the one on the Itel S11 refuses to do this unless you remove all the other applications from the dock (the area above the capacitive keys). When you begin adding apps to the dock, it jumps to the right. This isn’t a big deal & most folks won’t mind but I figure it’s something you should know.
There are a few additions in the software side & these are the App freeze & multiple account. App freeze is as the name suggests, you can use it to freeze applications that you don’t want to keep using your processing power or memory when you’re not using it. If you need to use the app, just unfreeze it. Multiple accounts feature lets you run multiple user accounts on the same device. This means that you can run 2 Facebook, WhatsApp, Twitter, Skype accounts on the same device without having to log out of one account. This is an appealing feature for people with two phone numbers & want to access both WhatsApp accounts on the same phone without utilising third-party apps.
5MP front, 5MP back
The Itel S11 sports a 5MP/5MP camera combination. This means there’s a 5MP camera at the front & back. The back camera boasts a f/2.0 aperture to make it easy to take good images in low light environments. The camera also comes with autofocus, a good feature that doesn’t appear in most smartphones in this price range. There’s also a dual LED flash to support the back camera when taking images while the lighting isn’t so good. The images produce by the 5MP camera are quite good when outdoors & its wide-angle lens lets it fit more object in one shot. When indoors, the camera is still a good one but I observed colour reproduction wasn’t that accurate. Overall, this camera is quite good for its price.
The front facing camera is likewise a 5MP one with a wide-angle lens with a f/2.2 aperture. This isn’t the best selfie camera out on the market but it surely is one of the best in the N24,000 price range. The camera takes some good shots when the lighting is good, if you are selfie fan, this phone is worth buying.
The Itel S11 boasts a 2400 mAh battery that that can last all through the day. The device has a small display & is not a high performing phone so you can get this battery to last the whole day. I’m sure even you would have preferred a much bigger battery, like a 2800 mAh or bigger, the few extra mAhs can give one a few hours of usage. The battery capacity is small though but not that bad.

You’d hardly find smartphones in theN24,000 that are worth recommending. Most phones usually end up being dull with nothing much going on about them. The Itel S11 is not one of such smartphones, it has a beautiful design & an amazing front facing camera. The device doesn’t feel cheap & performs quite well.
